Cavan left Mullingar with a win after Westmeath racked up a double figure wides tally in their league contest.
A host of missed opportunities cost Westmeath three league points against Cavan on Sunday, according to Lake County manager Frank Browne.
Browne's side were at home for the first time this season but paid the price for wasteful shooting in TEG Cusack Park.
Westmeath shot 11 wides on the way to a 1-4 to 6 point defeat in Mullingar.
That result leaves them with one win from their opening four games in Division 2.
Browne says his side will need to start picking up results.
He looks back on the game with Midlands 103's Jason Keelan:
Elsewhere in Division Two, Laois were pegged back by two second half Tyrone goals and needed a late point to rescue a 2-8 to 2-8 draw.
And in Ennis in Division Three, Offaly fell to their first defeat of the league campaign, losing to Clare 1-9 to 8 points.
