Sports In The Midlands Set To Go Behind Closed Doors Once Again

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly will confirm the measures after a cabinet meeting.

Sports across Ireland could be a victim of the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.

The Cabinet are reportedly forcing all sporting events back behind closed doors.

At present, crowds no bigger than 200 are allowed to attend outdoor sporting events.

It's expected that the new measures being brought in will be in place until September 13th at the earliest.

The news comes ahead of a big weekend in the football championships in Westmeath, with thirteen fixtures scheduled by the county board.

Athlone Town will also be affected, they have a home game with Shamrock Rovers II on Friday evening, while their women's team are due to make the trip to Galway.

They sold out their first home game in the Women's National League last Saturday.

GAA is currently scheduled to resume in Laois and Offaly from Monday, with seven games down for decision in the senior football championships across both counties if localised restrictions are lifted.

There's also a horse race meeting penciled in for Kilbeggan this Friday.
