Portlaoise man Gavin Thompson will be the first Irish competitor to take part in the World's which get underway in Winsconsin later today.
Thompson, a Prison Officer,, has been competing in the sport for eight years.
He'll be hoping his top 5 finish in British Pro Championships last year will be a sign of success to come in the States this week.
Today's quarter-final will involve a range of timber related tests including, chainsaw challenges, log rolling, and speed climbing.
If successful the Portlaoise lumberjack will compete in tomorrow's semi-finals, with the final set for Saturday.
The opening ceremony and quarterfinals of the competition are set to start at 11.30pm Irish time.
