They were forced to cede home advantage due to an unplayable pitched.
Offaly 1-5
Tipperary 4-21
Luck has not been on the side of the Offaly Camogie Senior team in recent weeks after having to reschedule their opening match in this year’s league, this weekend saw them having to concede home advantage. The match was due to take place in Mucklagh however after a pitch inspection on Friday afternoon it was deemed to be unplayable and with no other suitable pitch being available in Offaly the game was moved to Bansha in Tipperary.
Without the St Rynagh’s contingent, players being unavailable and retirements, the Faithful team that lined out showed only 6 players from last year's panel so taking on Tipperary was always going to be a big challenge for Susan Earner and her players. The match had the unusual occurrence of having sisters named on opposing panels, with St Cillian’s Aisling Brennan starting for Offaly and her sister Ciara named on the Tipperary panel. St Cillians also had Clare Hogan lining out for Tipp and Siobhan Killeen picked by Susan Earner. The novelty of a club represented on both sides was further evident with Moneygall supporters having divided loyalties with Mary Ryan playing for Tipp and Mairead Teehan, Catriona Doughan and Edwina King lining out for Offaly
Tipperary played with the aid of the strong wind in the first half and took full advantage of it as they quickly settled into their stride hitting two quick points before Mairead Teehan hit over a point for Offaly from a free. Following that, a high ball in from Tipperary was batted down by Eleanor Clendennen in the Offaly goals but Tipperary were first to react and finished the ball to Clendennen’s net. Tipperary dominated after this and continued to win possession from Offaly puck outs and scoring from them. After only 10 minutes on the clock the game was over as a contest with the scoreboard reading 3-5 to 0-1 and the scoring continued for the home side throughout the half. Orla Gorman did manage to breach the Tipp defence in the 16th minute and booted the ball to the net but it was little consolation for Offaly.
In the second half Offaly played with the benefit of the wind and credit to them they managed to stem the free flow of Tipperary scoring and the half was more competitive as a contest.
Susan Earner and her team will now go on to meet Dublin this weekend in another game that is scheduled to be a home fixture. It is one of the games in the league that Offaly will be targeting and hoping to get a result from as they make their way through their fixtures.
