There were mixed fortunes for midlands counties in Walsh Cup action yesterday.

Willie Maher got his tenure with Laois off to a winning start with 0-20 to 0-18 victory over Wexford.

Offaly ran Kilkenny all the way to the final whistle, last year's beaten All Ireland finalists won out 2-19 to 0-21.

And Westmeath were ultimately comfortably beaten by Galway who pulled away in the second half.

That one finished 3-27 to 0-20.
