They collected two points against Wicklow on Sunday.

Westmeath football boss Jack Cooney doesn't believe an injury to starting full-back Kevin Maguire is serious.

The Caulry clubman exited their victory over Wicklow in the first half, after sustaining a blow to the leg.

A full assessment will be carried out today, but Cooney was optimistic that he would be available for a local derby with Laois this weekend.

It'll come as a boost to the lake county, having found themselves 2-3 to 0-1 down after the opening quarter on Sunday afternoon. It was a start that had a severe look of ring rustiness about it and the improvement in the second-half and final quarter in particular was marked.

Cooney is expecting a significant step forward from his team after a disrupted pre-season:

That's only our second competitive game of the year.

We played Kildare in the O'Byrne Cup and this is our follow on from that, where we had three debuts today so was just delighted with the character and composure that they showed from half-time onwards.

Even halfway through the first half in trying to get something out of the game and work their way back into the game, after a really difficult start.

I think the result was more important than anything especially after the first 15-20 minutes, delighted with that and we will work on the rest from here on in.

On the Maguire injury in particular:

He got an impact injury on the side of the foot so he should be okay, we will get ice on it and assess it fully on Monday and take it from there.
