The delivery of a centre of excellence has been a long standing target of Westmeath chair Frank Mescall.
A Westmeath Centre of Excellence has moved a step closer this week after the county board's announcement of the purchase of land in Mullingar.
County delegates ratified the securing of 49 acres of land at a special meeting on Wednesday night.
Westmeath GAA are saying the purchase will see a centre of excellence delivered for "up and coming" young Westmeath players.
The proposal will be presented to GAA HQ in Croke Park with a view to completing the move.
They did temper expectations by describing the overall project as a long process.
