Midlands Communities To Celebrate St. Brigids Day

There is events taking place across all three counties.

As the first signs of spring begin to show, communities across the Midlands are coming together to mark St. Brigid’s Day or Imbolc by its Gaelic name. 

From Laois to Offaly and across Westmeath there's a range of family friendly events taking place.

St Brigid is the celtic goddess of inspiration, healing and smithcraft with associations to fire, the hearth and poetry, first introduced in 2023 the third annual St. Brigids Day bank holiday takes place this weekend.

Ireland’s newest bank holiday will see traditional events take place, but there will also be family friendly and engaging activities, as well as plenty of locations to visit for walks and strolls.

In Westmeath, Imbolc takes place at The Hill of Uisneach on Monday 2nd of February at 11:00 in the morning. Visitors will get to listen to stories of Brigid, gather around a fire at the summit where there will also be refreshments and music. 

In Offaly, the Imbolc milking of the goat festival takes place on Sunday the 1st, a seasonal ritual rooted in landscape, folklore and community. Those attending are meeting at 12:30pm in the afternoon at the former Dempseys Pub carpark in Cadamstown, proceeding to the Bracket Stones for 1 o'clock.

In Laois, the Coal Miners 5km road race will take place on Sunday, 1st of February at 10:00 in the morning on Monavea. It is a fast, flat 5 km course, just a short drive away from Portlaoise with cash prizes and spot prizes to be won.
