People should drink less than one sugary drink a week, according to a new report published in the British Medical Journal.
The research which analysed the health impact of sugar consumption also recommends we should have no more, than six tea-spoons of sugar a day.
The review undertaken in America and China found links between high sugar intake, and the likes of diabetes, gout and obesity.
It also found regular consumption of fizzy and sugary drinks is associated with increased body weight, compared to those who don't drink these beverages.
