15% Of Midlands Tourism Beds Contracted To Accommodate Refugees Or Asylum Seekers

In some counties, the rate is as high as 33%, according to a new report from Fáilte Ireland.

It's found nearly one in five tourist beds in Offaly and Westmeath are being used by a refugee or asylum seekers - the figures are 18% and 17%, respectively.

While the number in Laois is just over one in ten.

In Clare, Meath and Mayo, more than 20% of beds are contracted to the State's humanitarian efforts.

The report noted the number of beds under contract to the government is down since the summer, but warned the impact of these contracts on the tourism sector 'cannot be understated'.
