60 Complaints From The Midlands To Children's Ombudsman

Dr. Muldoon says young people have been remarkably resilient while their lives have been turned upside down during the pandemic.

About 60 complaints to the Children's Ombudsman last year came from the midlands.

Its annual report for 2019 shows an overall drop in complaints, but did record a rise in education-related grievances, at 49 per cent.

Ombudsman Dr. Niall Muldoon says it proves many children and families are still unhappy with how the education system supports them.

In total, the Office received 1,503 complaints last year - approximately 30 from Laois, and 15 each from Westmeath and Offaly - with family support and health some of the other mostly commonly raised issues.

Dr. Muldoon is appealing for the government to protect children and the services they use such as mental health treatment and cancer care throughout Covid-19.

He says young people have been remarkably resilient while their lives have been turned upside down during the pandemic.
