Bord Na Móna Seeks Jail Terms In Laois Bog Dispute Case

It's over an altercation between the men and security guards which allegedly took place on the bog.

A number of Midlands men will appear before the High Court next week over alleged interference with Bord na Mona's work at a bog in Laois, according to the Irish Times.

The semi-state body is asking the Court to imprison the men over their alleged contempt of a court order restraining them from interrupting the work at Garrymore Bog in Tinnahinch.

Agricultural contractor Liam Gorman has previously claimed his family own some of the land in question.

He insists Bord na Mona abandoned that land, and he is not in breach of any court orders.

Mr Gorman, from Silverwood in Mountmellick in Laois, is representing himself in the proceedings.

Bord na Mona says Gorman, and three other men are in contempt of a court order not to interfere with its work at the bog.

Last week, its lawyers told the court Mr Gorman, along with Kevin Barry, Daniel Marsh and Dermot Marsh, all of Clonin Estate, Clonin, Rhode, in Offaly were trespassing.

Video evidence was submitted showing an altercation between the men and security guards which allegedly took place on the bog.

However Mr Gorman says it took place on a private laneway.

Bord na Mona's lawyers want the men imprisoned for interfering with its work, but is not pursuing a trespass charge, despite being asked by Judge Oisin Quinn to provide written evidence that the altercation took place on the land in Laois.

The case is adjourned until next week.
