A Westmeath councillor has launched a campaign to have the site developed.
Calls are being made for an outdoor, covered community space in a Westmeath town.
A proposal has been made to provide a space between St Mary's Hall and the Old VEC in Athlone to cater for street markets, bike rentals and as a place for local musicians and artists.
However, the area is currently part of the site for the planned redevelopment of the derelict VEC building, with a planning application for business hubs in the advanced stages of being put forward.
