Peter Dinnegan's body was recovered by the Fire Service in Mullingar on Sunday.
The man who drowned in the Royal Canal yesterday is being named as convicted rapist Peter Dinnegan.
The 55 year old was jailed for five years in 1999 after pleading guilty to raping a woman in the early hours of July 25th, 1997 at Mill Road in Mullingar.
Gardaí in Westmeath say they are awaiting the outcome of a post-mortem before deciding what direction their investigation will take.
