It's one of nine counties that currently has no domestic violence refuge.
The development of three 'safe homes' in Offaly has taken a step forward.
The properties will provide a shelter for victims of domestic violence.
There are to be three 'safe homes' developed in the county - one in each municipal district of Tullamore, Birr and Edenderry.
This comes from a suggestion by Tusla in the Third Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Strategy, which highlighted gaps in the geographical coverage of safe accommodation for victims of domestic violence.
Two of the three properties have reached 'sale agreed' status, with the local authority pushing to acquire the final home.
The location of these 'safe homes' will be kept confidential, to protect the victims.
Once all three properties have been secured, the next step will be figuring out the licensing agreement for the three parties.
Offaly County Council is working with Offaly Domestic Violence Support Service and Tusla in the acquisition of these safe homes.
