The Portloman Plant serves Mullingar and the wider area.
A €5.7 million upgrade of Westmeath's water network is underway.
The works are taking place at Portloman Water Treatment Plant at Lough Owel, which provides drinking water to Mullingar and the surrounding area.
It'll involve replacing old infrastructure and installing a new pH correction facility, with upgrade to be completed by the end of 2023.
Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water, John McElwaine says the works will strengthen the local network for years to come:
The existing water treatment plant uses membrane ultrafiltration technology as the main treatment process.
The treatment plant will be upgraded by...
• Optimizing the plant with the provision of new pH correction facilities,
• New orthophosphate dosing facilities,
• Modifications and upgrades to chemical storage and the electrical installation,
• The replacement of the membrane ultrafiltration units.
The works are being carried out on behalf of Irish Water by Murphy Process Engineering.
You can get further information on the project here.
Irish Water says it will make every effort to keep water outages to a minimum throughout the project and will notify customers in advance of any necessary shut offs.
