A stretch of the N4 has been closed as a result.
Emergency services are dealing with a fatal collision in Westmeath.
The incident, involving a number of vehicles, occurred at Junction 17 Culleen Beg - known locally as The Covert junction, near Ballinafid at about 9.30 this morning.

Traffic on the westbound carriageway is being diverted at Junction 17 via the R394 to Castlepollard and the R395 to Edgeworthstown towards the N4.
Eastbound traffic is being diverted off the N4 at The Covert junction via L1819 to Multyfarnham village, the L1618 to Crookedwood, the R394 to Junction 17 and onwards towards the N4.
The road is expected to remain closed until at least 6 o'clock this evening.
Anyone traveling on that stretch of road either side of the Culleen Beg junction between 9.00 and 9.20 this morning is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station on 044 938 4000.
