A local councilor is warning of the dangers.
Emergency services attended the scene of a bog fire in Westmeath in the early hours of Friday morning.
The massive blaze broke out just after 12:00am, across Finea bog.
The fire crew from Castlepollard contained the fire throughout the night into sunrise.
Westmeath Councillor and member of the Castlepollard fire services Alfie Devine attended the scene and says conditions on the night were dry and windy, leading to approximately 100 acres of the bog being burned.
He believes it could have been caused by a discarded piece of glass or cigarette butt.
