The criminal gang impersonate members of Gardaí to steal cash from homeowners.
Five people have been arrested as part of investigations into a criminal gang involved in theft and fraud by impersonating members of Gardaí.
Investigations have been ongoing into the gang's activity in 15 counties, mainly in the midlands and the east over the past 10 months.
Two men in their 30s, one in his 50s and one in his 60s, and a woman in her 50s, are being detained at five Garda stations around the Eastern Region.
The arrests relate to members of the gang calling to rural homes, impersonating a Garda officer, claiming they were investigating burglaries in the area where sums of cash had been stolen and they were attempting to identify the owners.
They requested to compare money in their possession against cash held by the home owner and then proceed to take it away from the home owner.
The investigation is led by a Senior Investigating Officer, based out of an incident room at Kilkenny Regional Headquarters.
Gardaí are reminding people they will never cold call to a house and request to check money in this manner.
