The future of a midlands town will be the focal point of a new Economic Strategy, which has launched today.
The scheme will prepare for the development of Athlone, until 2040.
The town has been designated has a regional growth centre by the National Planning Framework and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy.
The strategy will aim to attract high-level investors, tourists and businesses to Athlone, and will focus on promoting employment and enterprise opportunities.
It will be overseen by an Implementation Advisory Group.
Councillor Vinny McCormack says:
"I am delighted to see the cooperation of both Councils in commissioning this Strategy which will be a valuable tool in guiding the future development of the regional centre of Athlone over the next 20 years."

"This strategy has been eagerly awaited and will enable Athlone to further develop its potential as a regional economic centre, a vibrant community, and an attractive place to work and live."
