The incident caused delays on the Roscommon Road on Tuesday.
Gardaí are investigating an alleged violent feud assault in Athlone.
It's believed the incident took place along the Roscommon road at around 4.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Traffic in the area was brought to a standstill as a group of men exited their cars carrying weapons.
Two men in their 20s were injured in the incident and hospitalised.
