Goverment Accused Of Ageism By Former Justice Minister

The Laois Offaly Deputy has criticised the lack of senior members within his own party.

A former Justice Minister has accused has accused the Government of ageism.

Laois Offaly TD Charlie Flanagan told the Irish Independent 'experience and wisdom' aren't rewarded in Cabinet, following a reshuffle at the weekend.

He says the 'more senior members' of his own party, Fine Gael, are all 'out of contention for high office or service' within Government.

The 66-year-old Deputy believes there's a 'huge focus on the youth vote' at elections, 'as though older people matter little and have nothing to contribute.'

He argues the Government would benefit from re-instating the likes of Richard Bruton, Michael Ring and Bernard Durkan.

The Fine Gael Deputy has suggested there should be electoral quotas for older people.

Laois Offaly Deputy Charlie Flanagan has accused Fine Gael of being ageist for not appointing some TDs in their 60s as Junior Ministers. 

59-year-old Kieran O'Donnell and Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, who's in her 40s, were the two new Ministerial appointments.
