The firefighter, seriously injured during a house fire in Westmeath last week, has undergone the first of many operations.
Patrick Berry was part of the Athlone Fire and Rescue Unit that responded to the incident at the home of former Offaly footballer Nigel Grennan and his wife Lisa in Mount Temple last Thursday.
While fighting the blaze, a wall collapsed on Patrick, resulting in 11 vertebrae fractures and several broken bones, as well as swelling on the brain.
He's currently undergoing treatment in Tullamore Regional Hospital, where he's already undergone the first of many operations.
Westmeath councillor Frankie Keena says two families have been left dealing with the consequences of the event:
Patrick's friends and family have set up an online fundraiser to help with the financial burden.
