It's hoped a solar powered bin will be installed in a Laois town before the end of the summer.
Councillor, John King's campaign to have the bin fitted at the square in Rathdowney was approved during the latest meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District.
A solar bin is estimated to cost between €4,500 and €5,000, and holds as much as six-times the amount of rubbish as a regular bin.
