They've applied to Laois County Council for planning permission.
A major expansion to Portlaoise Regional Hospital is being planned by the HSE.
The health service is seeking planning permission to build a new two and three storey extension to the east of the hospital.
The proposed development includes a new Respiratory Assessment Unit and an extension to the existing Pediatric Unit.
Covid testing facilities, which are currently housed in two single-storey prefabs, would also be relocated to the north of the hospital, along with a dedicated ambulance set-down area.
Laois County Council is due to make a decision on the plans by 4th January.
