The service has been absent from a Laois town for over 18 months.
Irish Rural Link is welcoming the inclusion of Meals on Wheels in the Draft Programme for Government.
The group, which has been campaigning for many years for better recognition for the service, which supports older people living independently in their own homes.
The service has been closed in Portlaoise since the summer of 2023 despite continuous efforts to secure its return.
Calls are still being made for their funding to be multi-annual, allowing for planning and budgeting for the services.
