Funding of the new programme is from the Government's Climate Action Fund.
Schools around the country will now be able to avail of solar energy from Government funding.
Eligible school will be provided with 6 kilowatts of roof-mounted solar PV, which should have the power of 16 solar panels.
The aim is to help schools in reducing their carbon emissions, as well as lowering their energy costs.
It's estimated that schools could save around €1,200 to €1,600 per year.
Schools in Offaly are being invited to participate in the first phase of the initiative.
Midlands Senator, Pippa Hackett says: "“While the typical amount a school can save will depend on a number of factors, the estimate I have received is that a school with a 6 kW Solar PV installation could expect to save in the region of €1,200-€1,600 per annum on their bill, when the money they’ve earned for selling electricity to the grid is taken into account"
