Junior Foreign Affairs Minister Condemning Attacks On Israel

Over 1,000 people have been killed in this weekend's conflict.

The Junior Foreign Affairs Minister is condemning the attack on Israel by Hamas militants.

22-year-old Kim Damti, who has joint Irish and Israeli citizenship, is among those missing after the weekend of violence, which saw 1,100 people killed.

Kim's mother Jennifer is from Portlaoise.

Israel has formally declared war on the Islamist group, after they attacked southern towns in the country.

A complete siege of Gaza has been ordered by Israel.

It follows a surprise weekend attack by Hamas fighters which has killed more than 700 Israelis - including at least 260 at a crowded music festival.

Around 500 Palestinians have died in retaliatory strikes on Gaza.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says stories about Ireland refusing to label Hamas a terrorist group are "categorically false." 

Some Israeli media claims Ireland, Denmark and Luxembourg took exception to using that phrase in an EU response.

However, the Department has clarified and says that is not true.

Hamas is listed as a terror organisation by the EU, as was agreed unanimously by Member States.
