Justice Minister Wants People To Come Forward Over Offaly Arson Attack

Two people have lost their lives after Saturday night's fire.

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan says those behind an fatal arson attack in Offaly will be brought to justice.

The Minister is joining gardai in appealing for information following the attack which claimed the lives of a woman and child in Edenderry. 

They’ve been named as 60 year old Mary Holt and four year old Tadhg Farrell.

 They died, after a fire was started deliberately at a family home in the Castleview Estate on Saturday night. 

Another woman in her 50s was seriously injured.

Independent Ireland Councillor in Edenderry Fergus McDonnell lives nearby and says the local community is horrified:


Sinn Fein Councillor in Edenderry Claire Murray says she extends her 'sincere condolences' to the family, friends and neighbours affected.

She's also acknowledging the work of emergency services who attended the scene and calls for those with any information to come forward to the Gardaí.

Fianna Fail councillor in the area, Claire Murray-Smale says gardaí must be given the resources to make the town safe:

While Offaly TD Carol Nolan is calling the incident a "barbaric and senseless" attack that has caused genuine devastation throughout Edenderry.

Deputy Nolan says that the Gardai have the community's full support in bringing the "perpetrators of this despicable act to justice as soon as possible".

Fine Gael TD for Offaly John Clendennen says people deserve to feel safe in their own homes:
