35 local CCTV schemes have been approved nationwide.
The Justice Minister is encouraging communities across the country to apply for funding for CCTV schemes.
Helen McEntee has announced funding of €1m to cover new schemes, as well as others which are "incomplete or obsolete."
To date, grants of over €950,000 have been approved for 35 local CCTV schemes nationwide.
Minister McEntee says community safety is a top priority for the Government:
Edenderry Green Party Councillor Mark Hackett says:
"In 2022 I chaired a subgroup of the Offaly Joint Policing Committee on safety from Gender Based Violence in our public spaces.
Nothing could be more important than that we all, regardless of our gender, feel safe in our communities.
One of the recommendations, strongly supported by An Garda Siochana, was that an interagency group work on progressing CCTV in the Tullamore / Greenway area.
It goes without saying in County Offaly why this is so important.
I welcome today’s announcement from Government that they are also committed to CCTV as a tool to empower communities to feel safer. I will continue to raise this and the other recommendations with the Council and the JPC. I
know there is local disappointment at the pace of progress but I believe we will get to where we need to be eventually."
