The Joint Urban Area Plan for areas of Athlone in Westmeath and Roscommon will support Ballymore's green city project.
Councillors in both Westmeath and Roscommon are working together to ensure smooth progression for plans to turn a Westmeath town into Ireland's first green city.
The Ballymore Group led by Sean Mulryan wants to transform Athlone into a city powered by 90 per cent renewable energy.
Mr Mulryan has been addressing local reps to get them to seek State backing for the project in order to complete it by 2040.
Fianna Fail's John Keogh sits on the Athlone muncipal district in the local authority in Roscommon.
He says the project ties into existing co-operation with Westmeath:
