Midlands Counties Celebrating Africa Day

Art, food, and music will be at the heart of everything taking place across the region.

Africa Day kicks off in the Midlands with events across the region celebrating African culture.

Westmeath is the first county to host its events, with Laois and Offaly to follow later on the month.

Africa Day is a annual national celebration set up by the Department of Foreign Affairs that celebrates the people and culture of African countries.

Westmeath is first up this weekend, with Moate Library hosting its "Faces Of Africa" art exhibition at half one today.

An Adults Art Workshop at Tuar Ard Arts Centre follows this evening at 6:30pm, followed by a Family Art and Craft Workshop tomorrow at 2:30pm.

A Street Feast and Parade of Flags rounds off the programme on Sunday in Dun na Si Amenity Park from 1pm until 6 pm.

Burgess Park is the stage for Athlone's event  this Saturday to showcase African food, dress and music from 1pm until 8pm.

However, it's not just limited to this weekend as Offaly and Laois both hold their events on Saturday May 31st.

O'Connor Square in Tullamore is hosting a Family friendly cultural event celebrating Africa Day with music, food, and crafts from 12pm to 6pm.

While in Portlaoise Leisure Centre, its event takes place from 11am to 6pm.

The programme includes a Traditional Dress Parade, Storytelling session, Africa Day Quiz and a Football Match between An Garda Síochána and the Laois African Support Group.
