Investigations are ongoing.
Gardai have seized a firearm and ammunition in Westmeath.
It's after a car failed to stop for a plain clothes Garda.
Gardai followed the vehicle and when it stopped a man in his 30s fled the scene and was followed on foot.
He was then arrested.
A bag which had been discarded during the foot chase was recovered by Gardaí which contained a firearm and ammunition.
Subsequently the passenger, a man in his 50s was arrested and both men were taken to a Garda Station in Westmeath where they are currently detained.
A number of follow up searches were conducted at residential premises in the Mullingar area and a number of items of evidence were also seized.
Investigations are ongoing.
