Households across Laois, Offaly and Westmeath could face rising heating costs as European gas prices have surged by up to 45% in recent days. 

Midlands North West MEP Nina Carberry says the situation shows how global tensions can quickly impact families and businesses locally. 

She’s calling on the European Commission to activate its gas crisis protocol and increase joint purchasing across the EU. 

CSO figures show many Midlands households rely on oil or gas for heating, with up to 48% in County Laois using home heating oil. 

She says higher gas prices could push fertiliser costs even further up for farmers:
