A Midlands MEP says a 'system failure' allowed hormone-contaminated Brazilian beef to enter the EU food chain.
It comes after confirmation from Commissioner Oliver Várhelyi during an agri-committee meeting in Brussels.
The Commissioner described the incident as a 'strategically organised breach,' noting that the contaminated beef entered through multiple EU entry points.
Brazilian authorities have been contacted, and certification for the farms and organisations involved has been suspended.
Ciaran Mullooly is calling for an immediate pause to the Mercosur trade agreement until the EU can fully guarantee the safety of beef imports.
