A Midlands MEP is warning the European Commission that farmers, contractors, road hauliers and households are facing a rapidly escalating cost crisis due to rising fertiliser and fuel prices.
Ciaran Mullooly says increases linked to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism have pushed fertiliser prices up by as much as 17% since January last year.
He believes tensions in the Middle East are compounding the problem by driving fuel costs higher.
He is calling on the Commission to consider suspending tariffs on fertiliser imports.
