He passed away in hospital yesterday surrounded by his family.
Midlands TD Charlie Flanagan is among those paying tribute to former Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire.
The 53 year old died in hospital in England yesterday after suffering from lung cancer.
Deputy Flanagan says he got to know him very well while serving as Minister for Foreign Affairs, and is proud to have known him and worked with him.
The Laois-Offaly Fine Gael TD says Mr. Brokenshire was a strong advocate of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
“It was during his period as Northern Ireland Secretary that I got to know him very well and we have remained in contact since then. I am proud to have known him and to have worked with him.
“James was a strong advocate of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and was a dedicated Northern Ireland Secretary from July 2016 to Jan 2018 when he resigned for health reasons.
“In all my dealings with him, I found him courteous and a politician with a strong sense of duty and integrity. He was a person of character, someone who could be trusted.
“I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to his wife Cathrine and his children, his wider family and his many friends and colleagues in the Conservative Party.”
