Midlands TDs Make First Speeches Of The 33rd Dáil

The leaders of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil say they will meet, after last night's sitting.

The leaders of Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are to meet next week for exploratory talks.

Leo Varadkar and Micheál Martin spoke over the phone last night after the first sitting of the 33rd Dáil failed to elect a Taoiseach. 

He says the current government will continue until a new one can be formed - with the next sitting of the Dáil on March 5th:

Longford-Westmeath Fianna Fáil TD, Robert Troy says there's a responsibility on all members of the Dáil to deliver a programme for government that will bring about the change people want:

Meanwhile, the party's leader Micheál Martin clashed with Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald over her party's past.

He said Fianna Fáil could not work with Sinn Féin because of its ties to the IRA:

And newly-elected Fianna Fáil TD in Longord-Westmeath, Joe Flaherty, used his maiden speech in the Dáil to pay tribute to former deputy, Castlepollard's Peter Kelly, who passed away last year after serving as a TD in the constituency from 2002 to 2011:
