Midlands Towns Improve Scores In Tidy Towns Competition

Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix was one of the big winners, taking home the Tiny Tidy Towns Schools Award.

Towns across the Midlands have improved on last years Tidy Towns scores, including past winners of the competition. 

Abbeyleix came up just 4 points short of this year's winner Carrick On Shannon, with a primary school in the town taking home the Tiny Tidy Towns Schools Award.

Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix takes home €2,000 in prize money for the school's garden and eco-projects.

Their active involvement in Green School and garden projects including water conservation, pollinator planting, vegetable beds and composting earned them the title. 

While the town itself earned a gold medal with a final mark of 395 after winning in 2023. 

It's an increase of 11 points, just 4 short of this year's winner Carrick On Shannon.

The total score is judged across eight categories, from community planning to sustainability with a maximum score of 550 points.

Ballinahown earned a second place finish in Sustainable Development Goals after taking home the title of Ireland's Tidiest Village last year.

They improved on their winning score of 385 last year by 13 points.

Durrow earned their first gold medal with a score of 392 and Portlaoise made it three medals in a row scoring 390.

Other strong Midlands performances include Crinkill - runner up in The Climate Action Award and winners of the Regional Large Town catagory in the All Ireland Pollinator Plan.

Rosenallis Tidy Towns received a Special Endeavour Award this year on 238 points up by 22.

Ballycumber took home the Bat Mural Award with Clara taking third  in the Town Centre First Award.
