The Famine took place between 1845 and 1852.

This year's National Famine Commemoration will take place in Edgeworthstown in Longford on Sunday, May 19th.

Culture Minister Catherine Martin says the event gives communities a chance to "gather and pay their respects to the people of our nation who faced hardship and suffering."

The Great Famine claimed the lives of a million people between 1845 and 1852, and was brought on by a potato blight.
