Plans progress to the next stage for new domestic violence refuge in Laois.
Laois County Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley recently highlighted plans for a new domestic violence refuge which is heading into the design stage of the project.
Laois is currently one of nine counties that does not have a domestic violence shelter.
Ms Dwane Stanley welcomes the project as she says it is badly needed.
The proposed refuge will be located in Portlaoise, just off the Mountrath Road, following Laois County Council’s purchase of a property worth €1.75 million.
Cuan has since been awarded the construction contract for the initiative, which is expected to provide a safe space for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
The development will be a boost to the local community, improving access to immediate support services and safe accommodation.
Due to the lack of such supports existing in Laois, residents have had to leave the area in the past to receive essential help.
The progression to the design stage marks an important step forward for the project, following the council’s investment in securing a site for the refuge.
Further details on the construction timeline and an expected opening date for the shelter are yet to be confirmed.
