It's one of a number of plans to attract people into Portlaoise by the local council.

It's hoped the new library in Portlaoise will bring much needed footfall.

Laois-Offaly Fianna Fáil TD Seán Fleming says he understands the pressure and ongoing challenges local businesses face due to covid-19.

But the Minister of State for Finance says the local authority is investing in the area and trying to attract shoppers into the town.

He says the new library development and the recent pedestrianisation of Main Street will help boost business:
