It's set to occupy five units over two floors at a local shopping centre.
A new Sports Direct store is on its way to Westmeath.
Planning permission has been granted by the local authority for the UK brand to occupy five units over two floors at Athlone Town Centre Shopping Centre.
As part of the development, an unoccupied restaurant will be converted into a staff canteen, an administrator's office and a storage area.
Two signs, reading 'Sports Direct USC', are to be erected at the Civic Square entrance and the Gleeson Street entrance to the shopping centre.
The planning report states there are a number of vacant outlets in the shopping centre that can accommodate stores which need to be moved to facilitate the Sports Direct store.
