The move is being described as a backwards step by a rural interest group.
The closure of nine Bank of Ireland branches in the midlands is "a backwards step".
That's the view of Irish Rural Link, as three outlets each in Laois, Offaly and Westmeath shut their doors for good today.
It's part of the bank's wider restructuring measures, with an increased focus on online banking.
A new arrangement with An Post means customers can carry out some transactions with their local post office instead.
CEO of Irish Rural Link Seamus Boland says the move is further blow to small, rural areas:
Bank of Ireland says it has written to all impacted customers of the closing branches to provide more information.
