The plans involve the demolition of eight buildings in Mountmellick.
Plans for a brand new Lidl store in Laois have been given the green light.
The Mountmellick supermarket is expected to deliver 30 new permanent jobs, while 100 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase of the project.
The plans involve the demolition of eight buildings on Emmett Street in Mountmellick to build the two storey building, a car park with bike spaces and associated works.
It comes after a public petition collected over 800 signatures in favour of the development after Laois County Council delayed a decision when looking for more information last year.
The store will be Lidl's third in Laois and is expected to contribute over 1 million euro to the local economy.
Lidl’s Regional Managing Director for the Newbridge area, Niall Murray, says:
“As Ireland’s leading discount retailer with a rapidly expanding customer base, we are delighted by the decision from Laois County Council to grant planning permission for our third store in the county. This project is about more than just a new building; by revitalising a long-derelict town centre site, we are delivering a significant economic boost to Mountmellick through job creation and the regeneration of a key local area."
