A former prison GP is shocked at the extent of the problem.
There were 1,251 drug seizures in Irish prisons last year - up 10 per cent on 2018.
According to details released under the Freedom of Information Act, more than 900 of them were in three Dublin prisons - Wheatfield, Mountjoy and Cloverhill.
Outside of the capital, the highest was in Midlands Prison in Portlaoise, at 97.
Dr. Greg Kelly, a former GP in Castlerea Prison in Co Roscommon, is surprised by the stats.
Dr. Kelly says the increasing number of seizures reflects the growing drugs problem in society.
