The HSE has spent over €25,000 in the Midlands in the last two years to bury people who have no family to make arrangements.
In 2024, approximately €116,000 to cover burial expenses for individuals was allocated, with €220,000 spent overall, according to the Irish Times.
The South and South East region accounted for the largest share of the spending, totaling around €82,000.
The HSE said that while families usually cover burial costs, its services sometimes fund funerals for patients with no known relatives.
