The Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at Regional Hospital Mullingar is bringing in the initiative.
A hospital in Westmeath is launching a new pet therapy initative to provide additional emotional support to people in the aftermath of sexual violence.
The Sexual Assault Treatment Unit at Regional Hospital Mullingar is introducing specially trained therapy dogs Cooper and Maisie into their patient experience.
It's launched in partnership alongside charity Cian's Kennels, which launched their mobile pet therapy service there in April 2025.
SATU staff decided to bring pet therapy in after seeing how it helped people in the hospital's paediatric services, with patients describing the therapy dogs as a source of comfort and reassurance.
