The County Council has turned down plans for 74 new homes.
Plans for the construction of 74 new homes in Laois have been refused.
Laois County Council turned down the planning application for the units on the Canal Road in Portarlington.
The project would have seen a number of two-storey homes and apartment blocks developed on the site.
However, the Local Authority determined the developer failed to demonstrate the vapour risks from subsurface contamination would not impact the health of future residents.
Developer, Limitlane Ltd, now has four weeks to appeal the decision to An Bórd Pleánala, if it wishes to do so.
