It includes a suggestion of creating more high speed intercity lines.

A strategic review of the rail system has been launched by the Transport Minister, with a view to potentially expanding it.

One of the suggestions put forward is more high speed lines which would connect cities across the island of Ireland.

It comes as Westmeath County Council has written to Irish Rail about the possibility of re-opening a station in Killucan.

Lecturer in Technological University Dublin, Conor Skehan, thinks more local connections should be looked at before higher speed lines:
